What is Unusual

Brands today are facing an existential crisis: their buyers are increasingly talking to AI to discover and evaluate their offerings, but most marketing teams have no idea how AIs are talking about their products, much less how to correct how AIs position their brand.

Companies use Unusual to understand and shape the way that AIs are talking about their brand. Marketing leaders use the platform to surface misconceptions, clarify differentiators, and measure the impact of their initiatives on AI models’ perception of their brand.

There are myriad companies building “SEO for AI.” True to our name, Unusual is different, and closer to “brand marketing for AI.”

Our investment in building a highly differentiated offering is paying off and we’re experiencing strong market pull during a cross-industry buying movement; we’re looking for teammates at the top of their game to join us as we build alongside brand and marketing leaders to define the category of brand engineering.

About the role

We cannot keep up with demand. We grew 285% in January with one person working half-time on GTM. This is a unique moment in time where every company is figuring out its AI marketing strategy and is desperate for a solution.

We’re now looking for a Founding Growth Lead to fully own outbound pipeline creation from zero to scale. This is an individual contributor role focused on building the systems, workflows, and experiments that power outbound.

You will be responsible for expanding our outbound growth efforts along two axes:

  1. Zero to one – Run experiments with new channels, messaging, and performance instrumentation
  2. One to one-thousand – Collaborate closely with the founders to translate early traction into a repeatable outbound engine that supports increasing deal size and volume.

Who you are

You are a high-agency builder who prefers designing systems over running playbooks. You move quickly, learn from signal, and don’t need structure or oversight to perform.

  • You are an individual contributor by choice and want to stay close to execution.
  • You think in systems and workflows, not just tactics.
  • You have understand how to generate qualified demand, and ideally have prior outbound or pipeline experience (SDR or AE)
  • You are comfortable operating in ambiguity and creating structure where none exists.
  • You are highly resourceful, experimental, and biased towards action.
  • You can vibe code or are technically fluent enough to automate workflows or prototype tooling (if you don’t have direct experience with this, you are eager to learn as you realize this ability changes everything)
  • You enjoy turning manual work into scalable infrastructure.
  • You are motivated by building something new, not just hitting quota.

About our team:

Our cofounder and CEO Will Jack is a second-time founder of Khosla-and-Greylock-backed Remedy Health. Will has been working in AI research since 2014 and is ex-SpaceX, MIT, and was a world science fair winner at age 16 for his homemade nuclear fusion reactor.

Our cofounder Keller Maloney is a former head of growth at 8VC-backed Gatsby. He has been working in AI applications since 2019, and he is an All-American water polo Captain and Cum Laude from Princeton University.

Our Head of GTM, Sarah Xu, is a repeat GTM builder with deep empathy for Heads of Growth and agencies. She drove 10X growth at Circle Medical (YC W17), built Ambience Healthcare’s GTM from pre-revenue (led to $350M raised by Oak HC/FT, Kleiner Perkins, OAI, a16z), and designed growth engines at Google for companies and agencies that scaled revenue 5–10X.

Unusual helps brands discover and change how AI models talk about them.

Unusual surveys models with thousands of targeted probing questions to understand how they form their opinions. We examine the sources they pull from, and find patterns in their reasoning, that let us create content and PR engineered to change those models' minds.

A typical Unusual customer sees more than a 40% increase in traffic from AI models within a month of going live.

Beyond driving more traffic, customers have used Unusual to shift models' perception of their brand from "niche" to "enterprise-platform", from "scrappy" to "customer-obsessed", and from "good for startups" to "a solid bet for the middle market".
