About the role

⚠️ Please only apply if you are available for an in-person role in Los Angeles. ⚠️

We are looking for a Software Engineer to help bring our surgical navigation system to market.

This role presents the unique opportunity to use your skills in writing production-ready software to make an incredible impact on clinical care.

Your first year at Illuminant will involve working in a team of committed clinicians and engineers to bring the product from prototype to commercial use in the operating room. You will help identify the gaps in product readiness for regulatory approval, finalize features for commercial use, and build processes to allow us to deploy safe and effective software. You will work on topics across rendering, projection mapping, point cloud registration, medical image segmentation, and 3D sensing.

Our ideal candidate is motivated to bring products from R&D into the hands of users, and has deep experience in working with production-ready code in regulated environments, preferably in medical devices. They can build software with regulatory standards and documentation in mind. They will have a strong interest in high performance computer graphics, augmented reality, computer vision, and computational modeling, especially in the context of medical software. They will be fluent in C++, C# and Python. They will have some experience in developing desktop applications for Windows and developing high quality user interfaces. They value and can institute modern, high-quality code development practices. They are energized by the accelerated growth, deep autonomy, and trajectory-setting impact that comes with joining as an early engineer.

📝 What You Will Do

  • Transform a polished prototype into a market-ready product.
  • Design, implement, test, debug, optimize, and deploy high quality software
  • Architect, implement, and refine high quality software development processes which touch on documentation, tests, releases, and more
  • Make design tradeoffs and translate product features into engineering specifications and projects.
  • Collaborate with and support other teammates in part selection, system integration, and system debug efforts.
  • Propose and lead future software development efforts.
  • Maintain comprehensive architecture and design documentation.
  • Communicate technical ideas in written and oral media, such as peer-reviewed papers, company blogs, and invited talks.

🏅 Your Qualifications

  • Committed to learning and using new skills to get the job done.
  • Excellent fluency in (and intricate knowledge of) C++, C#, Python.
  • Excellent foundation in modern software development processes, such as version control.
  • Deep experience with deploying production quality code for safety-critical or real-time systems.
  • Deep experience with medical and clinical applications.
  • Deep experience with FDA guidance related to medical device software, such as those dealing with SOUP and cybersecurity
  • Experience with user interface design.
  • Experience with quality systems.
  • Experience with software security.
  • Comfortable with Windows desktop application development.
  • Comfortable with optimizing algorithms for latency, throughput, and hardware constraints.
  • Familiarity with dynamic projection mapping a plus.
  • Familiarity with computer graphics and computer vision a plus.
  • Familiarity with modern 3D graphics engines, such as Unity a plus.
  • Familiarity with 3D imaging modalities (stereo, structured light, time of flight) and working with 3D data a plus.
  • Preferred MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Preferred 3+ years of industry experience.

About the interview

  1. Resume + Materials Review - Our SLA to reply to you is < 48 hours. We'll get you a decision to move to a phone screen or to pass for now within 2 days. A resume, coding samples (via GitHub), and other personal projects would be very helpful for us to decide if a fit is good.

  2. Initial Phone Screen - We'll get to know each other. We'll ask general questions on your background and we'll share more about what we're doing and what you'll be working on.

  3. Technical Interview (1-2 Rounds) - Generally open discussions on technical topics you'll be working on. Code review on previous projects (if provided).

  4. Culture Interview - Meet the whole team, talk about how and why you do your work.
